For many years, the upfront mortgage insurance premium that is added to the principal balance of FHA mortgages was refundable on a pro-rata basis no matter how the loan was paid off. This was changed several years ago and now the upfront mortgage insurance fee is only refundable if you are refinancing with another FHA insured mortgage. Because this change is many years old now, most people who were due a refund from HUD have already received their refund. Yet everyday I still see ads enticing people to work from home “processing” HUD refunds!

Folks, don’t fall for either scam. You won’t make significant money helping people get those refunds because not that many people are still on the list and they have already been bombarded by letters offering this service. But more importantly, it is 100% absolutely free both to check the records to determine if you are due a refund and also to request that refund.

If you have paid off an FHA insured mortgage, you can click here to find out for free if you are due a refund.

Update 4/16/2008: I meant to post this when I first read it, but it seems that HUD actually has been slack getting many refunds back to folks. However, my advice to people who want to earn money working at home is still to try something more legitimate. It is still free for people to find out whether or not you are due a refund, mortgage refunding still stopped with loans done after 2005, and it looks like it will be difficult to get paid for being a refund tracer since according to the article HUD is apparently slow about paying the refunds even when someone has applied for them!
If you are looking to make money on the internet, there are legitimate ways to do it that are are very inexpensive.
